Pool resurfacing
Resurfacing replaces the surface of the pool rather than covering it. It is the answer when the finish has worn through, is rough underfoot, is staining or flaking, or has reached the end of its life — the point where another coat of anything is money spent on postponing the job.
Replacing the surface, not covering it
The pool is drained and the failed surface is removed so a new one can bond to sound material underneath. That removal is the difference between resurfacing and painting, and it is why resurfacing lasts longer: the finish becomes the surface rather than a layer sitting on one.
What comes off first tells you what is underneath. Cracking, hollow areas or previous repairs that were never sound get found at this stage, and we would rather show you than work over them.
Resurfacing compared with painting
The two get quoted against each other constantly, so here is the honest comparison rather than a push toward the larger job.
- What actually happens
- Resurfacing removes the old surface and puts a new one on. Painting applies a coating over the surface already there.
- When painting is right
- The shell is sound, the existing surface is intact, and the goal is appearance. Shorter job, lower cost.
- When resurfacing is right
- The surface is rough, failing, flaking, or has already been coated repeatedly. Another coat will not hold on a surface that has stopped holding.
- Cost
- Resurfacing costs more up front. Whether it costs more over time depends on how many coats the alternative needs.
- Leaks come first
- Either way, a pool that is losing water gets diagnosed before it gets refinished. Resurfacing over an unlocated leak buries the problem.

How do I know if my pool needs resurfacing rather than painting?
If the surface is rough underfoot, flaking, exposing what is underneath, or has been coated several times already, a new coating has nothing sound to hold onto. If the surface is intact and it is about appearance, painting is the shorter job.

That depends on the pool and what is currently on it. Call and describe the pool — we would rather tell you what suits it than publish a single answer that is wrong for most pools.
Should the leak be found first?
Yes. Resurfacing a pool that is losing water means the surface goes on over an unsolved problem. Locating leaks is the work this company was built on, so it can be handled before the resurfacing starts.
How long does it take?
It varies with the size of the pool, what has to come off, and the weather. You get a schedule for your pool before work begins.
