Losing a quarter of an inch a day is normal evaporation for most of the year here, and up to half an inch is normal in hot, dry, windy weather. Loss approaching an inch a day, day after day, should be treated as a leak until proven otherwise. Two inches a day is clearly a leak, and you should call us the same day.
The 24-hour bucket test
The bucket test answers the question in 24 hours. Fill a bucket with pool water, set it on a step so the rim is above the surface, mark the water level inside the bucket and the pool level outside it, and turn the pump off. A day later, compare the two marks. If the pool level dropped noticeably more than the bucket level, the difference is a leak, not evaporation.

Because only the spa was losing water, the leak had to be in the spa’s own plumbing. We found a break in a return line beneath the spa’s concrete, lifted the pavers, opened the slab directly over the break and repaired it.
Our process
We follow a set process instead of guessing. Each step narrows the search until there is one exact place to open.
We confirm the pool is losing water and rule out evaporation. Then we isolate each plumbing line and pressure-test it; a line that will not hold pressure is the one with the problem.
Acoustic listening equipment narrows the leak down to one point along the line, and we mark the surface above it. Nothing is opened to find the leak.
The repair needs only a small opening at the marked point. If you schedule it with us, the same crew that found the leak makes the repair, and your written report covers what was tested, found and fixed.
